Vasyl Lomachenko Vs Nicholas Walters – Preview and Prediction

In what has generally been a disappointing year for boxing fans in terms of seeing big fights being made, there has still been a few outstanding bouts that have captured the imagination, and this fight is one of them.

Former amateur star and two time Olympic champion Vasyl Lomachenko is a rising star in the making and arguably the most gifted fighter on the planet right now, his opponent Nicholas Walters is a devastating puncher and is yet to taste defeat, this has the ingredients to be a really entertaining spectacle.

On the line is Lomachenkos WBO super featherweight title, the Ukrainian is already a two weight world champion and this is only has 8th professional fight, however it hasn’t been completely plain sailing for Lomachenko he has already been beaten as a professional, losing to Orlando Salido by split decision, his first attempt at a world title in only his 2nd professional fight.

Walters himself is aiming to become a two weight world champion but according to the bookmakers the odds are stacked against him, and The Axe man can be had for odds as long as 11/2 at some books.

Lomachenko is probably the best amateur boxer of all time boasting a record of 396-1 and two Olympic and world championship gold medals, he is extremely adaptable to any style, controls the distance of a fight like no other and his footwork and movement is truly poetic at times. In his last bout against Roman Martinez he also showed his punching power was more than sufficient, stopping the tough Puerto Rican inside 5 rounds.

Walters is an athletic and explosive fighter with devastating punch power, he is offensively exceptional and mixes up his punches well to body and head, he is an accurate puncher but his offensive style is complimented with a somewhat exploitable defence at times.

I feel this fight is Lomachenkos to lose, Walters will unquestionable be dangerous while he is in there and as always with fighters who hit as hard as Walters does, there is always that punchers punch.

For me however while Walters is an excellent fighter, Lomachenko is a special fighter that only comes a long once in a while and he should have the technical attributes to exploit Walters open defence and I can see him beginning to unravel the Jamaican by the middle rounds.

It is a tough one to bet and this fight going the distance its certainly a real possibility and the bookmakers think it will, with a Lomachenko decision being the odds on favourite outcome of the fight.

However I think the value is on a Lomachenko stoppage win at 2/1 this weekend, Walters is hittable and while Lomachenko has not proven to possess one punch knockout power, I feel he will be able to draw Walters on to his power shots and Lomachenko has enough power to force a stoppage as he showed against the tough Roman Martinez.

However due to the huge odds being offered on Walters we can straddle the play meaning only a Lomachenko decision victory or draw can prevent us from profiting.
