Tony Bellew Vs BJ Flores – Preview and Prediction

Tony Bellew makes the first defence of his WBC cruiserweight title against American BJ Flores at the Echo Arena, Liverpool, this Saturday night. The bout will be live on Sky Sports 2 from 8pm.

The card also features Olympic Gold Medalist Luke Campbell against Liverpudlian Derry Mathews in an intriguing match up.

Tony Bellew came from the film set of the new Rocky Film ‘Creed’ in which he starred, to write his own Rocky script when he upset Ilunga Makabu in devastating fashion back in May this year.

After being dropped in the first round, Bellew showed unbelievable grit to turn the fight on it’s head and knocked out Makabu cold in the third round to capture his first world title. It really was like something out of a Rocky film. Fitting.

He now goes in against a guy who hasn’t really done anything to suggest he is worthy of a world title shot, Flores while capable, solid and fairly rugged does not have a notable win on his record, the two times he has stepped up a level in the likes of Danny Green and Biebut Shumenov he has lost by wide decisions.

Tony Bellew will be the best fighter BJ Flores has faced by a notable margin.

This is a voluntary defense by Bellew and his team, which should give Bellew a low risk opportunity to show off his shiny new belt in front of a loyal hometown crowd, however there are much tougher fights that await Bellew in the cruiserweight division, that is for certain.

However while this really should be a straight forward defense for Bellew, Flores isn’t someone you want to completely overlook as he does bring some assets to the table, he has never been stopped in 35 fights and carries enough power to make it count if Bellew gets sloppy.

I think Bellew has a good chance of finding a stoppage this weekend but there is no value in it for me whatsoever at 8/13 against an experienced guy who has yet to be stopped in his career.

I think the value lies in a Bellew unanimous decision at 11/4 at ladbrokes, that is generous enough odds for me to take, I could certainly see this going the distance.

Ultimately however this should be a fairly comfortable defense for Bellew either way, providing he remains focused and doesn’t look past BJ Flores this weekend.
