Sergio Martinez Vs Miguel Cotto

Preview, prediction and betting recommendation

Sergio Martinez puts his WBC middleweight title on the line against Miguel Cotto this weekend in what is a mouthwatering clash on paper, Sergio Martinez the established champion at middleweight looking to retain while Cotto moving up to middleweight for the first time looks to become a 4 division champion. The bout is made at a catchweight of 159 lbs.

Martinez now 39 years old won his middleweight title back in 2010 against Kelly Pavlik and has since defended it 6 times against solid opposition such as Julio Chavez Jr, Paul Williams, Martin Murray. Martinez will be the bigger man this weekend.

Cotto is a highly skilled boxer/puncher who has fought at the very top elite level, gracing the ring with  both Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao and beating an array of elite level fighters such as Zab Judah, Paulie Maliggnaggi, Shane Mosley, Antonio Margarito, however the wheels looked like they had began falling off when he was comfortably handled by Austin Trout back in 2012.

However a ring return in 2013 saw him blast out Delvin Rodriguez in 3 rounds, Rodriguez while not elite is highly capable. That performance sent out a statement that Cotto is not done yet and could still have a shot at the top.

The way I see it is despite Martinez being 39 years old he is the quicker guy, he has hand speed and reflexes on Cotto and I dont like this match up for Cotto, I can see Sergio Martinez dominating Miguel Cotto this weekend.

Martinez has a hands down style and relies on his quick reflexes to outwit his opponents, that could be dangerous against a big puncher like Miguel Cotto who if he lands his left hook could change the course of a fight instantly.

The risk is Martinez has been plagued with injuries in the last couple of years and he has been down in his last 3 fights, however he has always had his wits about him whenever he has been hurt.

For me Martinez is the bigger man, the faster man, is a decent puncher and could be in a position were he is landing big shots at will against a guy fighting at a weight for the first time.

You can get 1/2 on Martinez and 2/1 on Cotto, I say Martinez wins this handily and I would be prepared to take the 1/2 on, however I think there is a play in the method market that is worth a shot, Martinez is 11/4 to get the KO/TKO and I think he just might.

Boxing Tipster’s Bet: £40 on Sergio Martinez by KO/TKO 11/4 Bet365
