Scott Quigg vs Yoandris Salinas – 5th October 2013

O2 Arena, London, UK

WBA World Super Bantamweight title

Scott Quigg defends his WBA title for the first time after being upgraded to full champion having previously held the interim title, he goes up against a slippery and illusive Cuban in Yoandris Salinas.

Salinas was an accomplished amateur and won over 300 fights beating the likes of 2 x Olympic gold medallist Zou Shiming, he isn’t the most active fighter in the ring however he has tricks, slick movement, decent defence, some power and is a guy who can make mistakes pay.

Quigg is a strong and big bantamweight, so far despite a slight hiccup against Jamie Arthur when he suffered a knockdown, his career has been almost punch perfect to date and he has shown exceptional boxing skills and class. Quigg is a spiteful puncher and packs a mean body shot, he mixes up his combinations well and throws with meaning.

If the fight goes the distance i see Quigg with his hands raised as i figure he will be the guy who adopts the higher work rate and is also a fairly accurate and precision puncher he should be able to outland the Cuban by enough over 12 to get a decision on home soil, however i am not so sure this one goes the distance.

I think Salinas will be dangerous and i wouldn’t be surprised to see Quigg having to overcome a mini crisis in this one, however i think he will and i think stops the Cuban at some point in this fight. Quigg is a highly determined athlete who dedicates his life to his training, he is strong, well chiselled and prepared and i think his work rate, spiteful punching may wear down the Cuban.

The way i am going to bet this fight is by straddling the KO markets, Quigg is 11/10 to find the stoppage that price looks reasonable for a guy with 13 stoppages from his last 14 fights. However i am going to also make a play on Salinas by KO/TKO, the odds at 9/1 make it viable without eating into too much profit if the Quigg play wins, and we can also bag some decent profit if the upset occurs.

ATR’s Bet – £40 on Quigg by KO/TKO 11/10 Bet365, £10 on Salinas by TKO/KO 9/1 Coral.
