 Ricky Burns Vs Omar Figueroa

Preview and Prediction

With his career on the slide and outside of the ring his bank balance showing a zero, Ricky Burns takes a Texan gamble as he goes into unbeaten former world champion Omar Figueroa’s back yard in a hope to revive his career and bank balance.

On his last few performances it would be safe to say Ricky Burns has seen better days and this might just be one final hurrah on the big stage for the Scottish braveheart from Coatbridge.

However with all his legal and financial troubles outside of the ring this really is a fight Burns can sink his teeth into, its a big pay day for Ricky and a win would reignite his career and lead to more pay days.

Burns is a boxer brawler type of fighter but when he is on the money he really can switch into a slick boxing mode, we haven’t seen that from Ricky of late but if he can rekindle some of the Ricky Burns of old, this fight may not be as one sided as some people think.

We know Burns has the heart and he should be very motivated for this fight, however it really is if’s and but’s, if the Burns that showed up in his last 2 fights shows up this weekend, he will be stopped for the first time in his career. However if a Burns of old turns up, we could be on the cusp of an upset this weekend.

The 25 year old is predominantly a come forward pressure fighter, Figueroa fights relentlessly at a high pace and will wear opponents down, currently unbeaten Figueroa also has home town advantage and the chips look stacked massively in his favour this weekend.

However Figueroa has struggled in fights against lesser opposition than Burns, he sneaked past now 19-6-0 fighter Jerry Belmontes in his penultimate fight and before that I thought Nihito Arakawa nearly broke him in a fight of the year type contest in 2013.

Figueroa will look to pressure Burns from the very first bell given how Burns has appeared to struggle with pressure as of late, and it may well pay off.

However Burns is a former two time world champion and this might not be as straight forward for Figueroa as people believe.

Figueroa is a relentless former champion who brings many attributes to the table, however I do not believe he is unbeatable for a guy like Ricky Burns. If Burns can rekindle something, an old flame from somewhere he may just be a match for a guy like Omar Figueroa.

It’s a big ask in Texas for Ricky Burns and we may see Burns career even further in tatters after this weekend, but I believe this is a closer fight than the bookies have it. Ricky Burns is 13/2 just to win at some books, that is generous for me.

Also 8/5 being offered up for Figueroa to win by decision is also great value, I think the 8/5 on a Figueroa decision and 13/2 on Ricky Burns just to win are good enough odds to bet on both outcomes looking to profit.

£15 on Figueroa by decision 8/5 Paddy Power, £10 on Ricky Burns 13/2 Bet365
