Odlanier Solis Vs Tony Thompson

Fight preview and betting recommendation

This write up is a little bit later than i would have liked as i have been trying to find out the weight of each fighter, and with the twitter ban in Turkey information hasn’t been as forthcoming as usual, anyway weights are Solis 257 and Thompson 266.5.

Weights are important in any fight but i was particularly interested in this one and the shape Solis was going to come into as in my opinion Solis has all the ability but sometimes i question his inconsistency and perhaps his dedication in training and it appears to me from the weight and the photo’s (while 255 is reasonable for Solis given he has a career high of 271 vs Monte Barrett)  Solis does not look as in shape as he should be for such a meaningful fight in the heavyweight division and one that could define his career.

Solis a former Olympic gold medalist a decade ago and a stand out amateur has yet to fulfil the high expectations people had of him when he turned professional 7 years ago, one shot at a world title against Vitali Klitschko ended in disaster via a 1st round KO, the KO was controversial as it appeared a clipped shot from Vitali and it was claimed Solis had a knee injury and due to this could not steady his feet, however i think it was a legitimate shot right on the temple from for Vitali that seemed to hurt Solis, sometimes those shots are more damaging than they look.

Thompson is a late comer starting his professional career  but is probably the best American heavyweight on the scene at present, he twice upset the odds recently stopping David Price in consecutive bouts, in his last bout he started well against highly rated Kubrat Pulev but seemed to lose steam as the fight went on and Pulev pulled away in the second half of the fight to claim a unanimous decision.

Thompson is i believe fighting at a career high at 266.5 but i believe he can pull of another upset here against Solis who has looked out of sorts against much lesser opposition, there is one thing losing a competitive fight to Pulev but looking out of sorts against guys like Leif Larsen, concerns me. I think at 5/2 there is some value to be had in Thompson and i am going to make a small play.

Boxingtipster.com’s bet – £20 on Thompson 5/2 Betfred (also cover the draw with a £1 stake at 25/1)
