Mikey Garcia Vs Juan Manuel Lopez – 15th June 2013 (Boxnation 2am)

Prediction, Preview and Betting Tip

Location – American Airlines Center, Dallas, Texas, USA

vacant WBO featherweight title
*García loses title on the scales, belts (WBO & The Ring) on the line for López only.

This looks to be a thrilling contest between two big punching featherweights, Mikey Garcia legitimised himself as one of the top featherweights in the world with a quite sensational performance against Orlando Salido, Salido had previously stopped JuanMa Lopez in two epic battles previously.

Many seem to be pointing to the common opponent in Salido to predetermine the outcome of this fight and while it is certainly relevant in the fact Juan Manuel Lopez lost twice to Salido and Garcia donned the surgeon mask and put on a clinic against Salido, the matter is styles (among over factors) are more likely to be the predetermining factor and Lopez is a completely different fighter to Salido and will bring to the table different problems to what Salido brought Garcia.

Garcia is the heavy betting favourite, many feel Lopez is shot after his two wars with Salido and is there for the taking, they could be right. However this is massive opportunity for Lopez to propel himself right back up there, he is currently staring down the barrel of last chance saloon in terms of the huge fights and his potency in the selection process thereafter.

One of Lopez’s biggest weaknesses has seemed to his defensive frailties, who will often take a shot to land a shot, and it is a wonder how he copes with a guy like Garcia has power and precession in abundance and often lands with a high connection ratio, however Garcia is patient and his punch output generally increases as the rounds progress after he has worked his opponent out and become one with his environment.

Garcia has failed to make weight by 2 pounds and looked rather gaunt at the weigh in and i feel this could open the door for an upset, Lopez was once one of the most feared offenses in the sport and i have no doubt he will take it to Garcia from the off and if he is to have any chance in this bout he needs to hurt Garcia really bad, early.

In this writers opinion you write Lopez of in this bout at your own peril its as simple as that, if i were to make a prediction then i would look for Lopez to start brightly and maybe notch some rounds but once Garcia finds his rhythm we could be looking at non-stop one way traffic in Texas going into the second lap, resulting in a late stoppage for Garcia, however at 4/9 i would not be willing to make a large play in it happening.

Lopez is 7/1 to get the TKO/KO victory and i think that is a very good price given his power, offense coupled with the fact he may be facing a weight drained opponent Saturday Night.

However don’t be surprised if Garcia dons the surgeon mask once again, he is clearly an incredible talent however his chin and resilience has yet to be taken to the “other side” and Juan Manuel Lopez could just be the guy that takes him there.
