Miguel Vazquez Vs Denis Shafikov

Fight preview and betting recommendation

Vazquez the IBF lightweight champion puts his belt on the line against unbeaten Russian Denis Shafikov in China this weekend, in a match up the bookies have close.

Vazquez has only lost to Elite fighters in Saul Alvarez and Timothy Bradley, he won the vacant IBF title against Ji-Hoon Kim in 2010 and is now making his 6th defense.

Vazquez is an extremely skilled operator, his movement is world class and his dictation of range and distance almost flawless. He has an undeniable defense, and has opponents scratching their heads at how to get to him, especially without eating a jab or counter punch.

Shafikov is now 33-0-1 and has beaten a range of quality opposition, however Vazquez is a significant step, but one he should now be taking for a world title shot he deserves.

Shafikov is a short southpaw stance fighter, he uses upper body movement well to find his way inside, but against a long highly skilled fighter like Vazquez he really will need some tricks.

This match up may not by one for the thrill seekers, but more for the purists, i can see Shafikov pressing the action but being outboxed and outskilled here.

The only problem with Vazquez is he is not always busy enough, and can throw away rounds, however i really expect him to handle Shafikov here Vazquez is simply too skilled in this match up, and i actually think 8/11 is a really good price on the Mexican.

If Vazquez handles the southpaw stance, stays busy enough this could be close to a shutout victory for him.

I am playing Vazquez here, really we could look at playing the decision at 5/4 – it is extremely likely the fight goes the distance, Vazquez is not a huge puncher but i think the difference in price is not significant enough to carry the extra risk regardless of how small.

Also the bet is with bet365 and on the outright plays we are also covered in the event the fight is a draw so need to take that into account also.
