Matthew Hatton Vs Chris van Heerden – 2nd March – Boxnation

Location – Sandton Convention Center, Johannesburg, Gauteng, South Africa

International Boxing Organization welterweight title

Matthew Hatton travels to South Africa to enter the champions den to fight for the IBO welterweight title, he faces Chris van Heerden who is a household name over there and actually this fight is a big big fight in South Africa and the Sandton is expected to be packed out to the brim, this is worth noting as Hatton will be faced with a very hostile crowd, in a country that hasnt always been known to give a fair shake either, if he is to win he will have to convincingly and leave no doubt.

Some may remember Hatton has been caught on the wrong end of a decision for the IBO belt before when he fought Lovemore Ndou back in 2009, the fight was scored a draw and as a result Ndou kept the belt whilst Hatton walked away empty handed.

The way i see this fight is different to how the bookmakers seem to see it, i actually see Hatton as the superior fighter in there, you see Van Heerden fights from a southpaw stance but he doesnt look like the most difficult Southpaw to face, he likes to come forward and control the ring but he can come forward quite raw and leave himself open and i believe with Hattons hand speed and technical superiority, Hatton will have options in this fight and ultimately some decent success in landing big shots as Van Heerden trys to work his way inside.

Van Heerden just doesnt seem that technically gifted to me, however he does seem to have a real will to win and an element of durability about him and given the fact he will have about 10,000 people shouting his name this is an extremely tough fight for Hatton and Van Heerden does seem to let shots go with some real meaning especially to the body and he also works well inside once hes got there.

Matthew Hatton has never really made the step up to work class level like his brother and has always fallen short when he has tried to elumunate, he has always been stuck in the middle between a European level type fighter to a world level fighter , and i believe at this kind of level he will be extremely competitive, However their are negatives with Hatton he can be very hit and miss at times, however a Matthew Hatton at his best tomorrow night i believe can win this fight.

Hatton is 7/2 to win, thats a decent price, however the location makes me more conservative, however the real odds that caught my eye was Hatton to find a stoppage at 10/1 now thats a bold move as Hatton isnt a big hitter however i think he will land plenty tomorrow night and he will have a fairly open guy standing in front of him for much of the fight and that price is too good to really pass up for a nibble.

If the location was different i would probably back Hatton more in this fight but with the location and the hostile environment Hatton will be going into im not 100% confident he is going to come out victorious here and i can see this fight going against him but from what i can see of both fighters this fight is very much a winnable fight for Hatton if he puts in a performance and the with the meat on the odds i have to make a play here as i believe theres a large amount of value, specifically in the method market.
