Lee Selby Vs Evgeny Gradovich – Preview and Prediction

The ‘Welsh Mayweather’ Lee Selby will take on the ‘Russian Mexican’ Evgeny Gradovich for the Russians IBF featherweight belt, this looks a real clash of contrasting styles as the fighters nicknames would suggest.

Selby will get the chance to become a world champion after nearly 7 years as a professional and he won’t get a much better chance than Gradovich this weekend.

Early on in Selby’s career it looked as if we may be looking at a domestic level fighter as he dropped his first defeat in only his 5th professional fight, however Selby has shown himself to be a fantastic talent over the last 4 years.

Selby fights with a finesse and ring smarts that earned him the nickname The Welsh Mayweather, while it is probably tongue in cheek stuff, Selby is very good at the art of hit and not be hit.

Selby’s power at world level may be questionable but he can really break opponents down via accumulation, this could be a really good style match for Selby and he could put on a show this weekend.

After compiling an amateur record of 123-23 Gradovich turned professional in 2010 and is currently unbeaten in the pro ranks, he won the IBF title with an upset win against Australian Billy Dibs in 2013 and has defended the belt on 4 occasions, including a split draw in his last bout against Puerto Rican Jayson Velez.

Gradovich is trained by Roberto Garcia and lives up to his name as the Mexican Russian, coming forward and piling on pressure relentlessly, if he can turn this fight into war of attrition, he may just come out victorious.

Gradovich while not the biggest puncher, he has an edge on Selby in power and he is physically strong and unremitting, he will come in as the underdog but he is certainly a live one.

Selby can not afford to have an off night on Saturday night, if he does, Gradovich will make him pay for that. If Selby performs like we know he can, then I can see him putting on a clinic this weekend.

In my opinion Gradovich has a style made for Selby providing he is switched on, in and out and performs to the best of his ability. Selby is a physically big featherweight and I think he will be able to handle the pressure of Gradovich and become a world champion this weekend.

I like Selby by decision in this one but just under evens is a little stingy as I do believe Selby can get the stoppage, down at Paddy Power they have Gradovich to be knocked down at 9/4 I think there is some value in it, that is where my play is this weekend.

BETTING TIP – £20 on Gradovich to be knocked down 9/4 Paddy Power.
