Kell Brook Vs Shawn Porter – Preview, prediction and betting recommendation

Kell Brook Vs Shawn Porter – Preview, prediction and betting recommendation

Kell Brook finally gets his shot at a world title against IBF Welterweight champion Shawn Porter, Brook ends a 10 year wait in the professional game for this shot and make no mistake this is a massive opportunity for him to announce his arrival on the world stage in front of an American crowd stateside.

If Brook beats Porter in spectacular fashion this weekend the door is wide open for him to go on and fight more big names, a mouthwatering clash with Amir Khan suddenly becomes a real possibility for a start.

But Porter is an excellent fighter, he is physical very strong and compact, he is athletic, quick and explosive. Brook will certainly have to perform to the best of his ability to get a W over Porter make no mistake.

Porter actually fought at middleweight during his amateur days and possessed a very good record of 276-14 winning a golden gloves championship.

It is worth noting he was knocked out as an Amateur by Emilio Correa, the guy who James Degale beat to win Gold at the Olympic Games in Beijing, while that cant be taken out of context to a Welterweight clash it is reassuring for Kell to know Porter is not made out of Granite.

Kell Brook is the superior technician in this bout, while Porter can still box from the outside his technique looks a little raw and unrefined and he relies on pure aggression which so far has been effective for him to date.

Brook is all about crisp combinations, good movement and an excellent jab which is delivered with authority. Kell probably has underrated power but sometimes it’s hard to gauge against the level of opposition he has faced.

Kell struggled with journeyman Carson Jones in his first fight with Jones two years ago, scratching out a Majority decision win after coming under some fire late on. I think a stamina issue was the underlying problem for Brook which was rectified in the rematch, which Brook won with a dominating display. Stopping Jones in the 8th round after battering him from pillar to post for the majority of the fight.

My opinion is Carson Jones is underrated and his record and tag of Journeyman is illusive, Jones is a tough opponent and perhaps the performances looked worse than what it actually was, but all in all Brook put things right in the second fight with Jones.

Porter struggled with Julio Diaz in 2012 and I thought he was lucky to escape with a draw, Diaz is really a blown up lightweight and while he put things right a year later with a unanimous win over Diaz in a rematch it was still competitive.

Both fighters have had their struggles against opposition they perhaps should be beating more decisively.

However since his struggle with Diaz, Porter has notched up two very excellent wins against Devon Alexander and Paulie Malignaggi and as a result his stock has risen dramatically. He banged out Paulie Malignaggi inside 4 rounds in April and I think that is when people really took notice of Shawn Porter, no one has ever banged out Malignaggi.

Brook notched up an impressive display against Senchenko, stopping the former WBA world champion in the 4th round, however the display still fed the critics as Brook was stiffened by Senchenko in that bout and I think it highlighted that Brook at times, can be very hittable when he exchanges.

I think this is a fight where any outcome can occur, it could go the distance in favour of either man or either can hurt the other enough to get a stoppage win.

Brook will need to keep the fight on the outside as much as possible and find a way to tie up Porter and neutralise Porter’s hooks when he gets inside on Kell, He needs to earn Porter’s respect early on in the fight.

I think Kell is being highly underestimated in this bout at a 2/1 dog, Porter while impressive in his last two bouts I am not sure I give him the credit others do for the win against Paulie Malignaggi.

Paulie is well past his best and his reflexes looked slow and well off in that bout and unfortunately for Paulie he is feather fisted so Porter could take as many risks as he liked without fear of being knocked out or badly hurt. It will be a different story against Kell.

I still believe the Shawn Porter who struggled with Julio Diaz still lurks in there somewhere and Kell has the better skill set and most certainly has the tools to beat this guy.

I am going for a Kell Brook win, and I wouldn’t be surprised if it is inside the distance but ultimately I believe a points win is more likely for Kell, however the first 3-4 rounds will be very dangerous for Kell if he gets past those relatively unscathed I expect him to begin to outbox Porter and pull away later in the fight.

Regardless of the outcome I expect this fight to be a classic encounter with two styles that could make for an absolute belter of a fight
