Kell Brook Vs Errol Spence – Preview and Prediction

Kell ‘The Special One’ Brook will defend his IBF world welterweight title against Errol ‘The Truth’ Spence Jr in front of a 30,000 home crowd at Sheffield United’s Bramall Lane this Saturday night.

This is the match up of the year for me in what is shaping up to be an exceptional year for the sport of boxing, of course everyone will have there own opinions, mine is this is number #1 and #2 going head to head in the lucrative welterweight division, we are just going to find out in what order they go.

Brook will already have had to overcome a tough test before even stepping into the ring  and that is getting down to the 147 lbs limit from the 160 lb middleweight limit, having stepped up to face middleweight king Gennady Golovkin in September 2016.

A fight in which he suffered his first loss, a 5th round stoppage defeat, in which he suffered a broken eye socket and his corner threw in the towel after he was beginning to take too much punishment.

However Brook fought well and there is no real shame in losing to Gennady Golovkin after moving up a stone in weight, it was to be expected, the real question now has the move in weight seriously harmed any future campaign at welterweight, the fact that Brook was walking around at 149 lbs 5 days before the fight suggests he is going to make weight comfortably.

The bookmakers have priced Brook as the slight underdog at 6/4 whilst the hyped American Spence is 4/6 favourite, which is probably a reasonable reflection of the bout given Brook is moving back down in weight and Spence has been putting in some powerful displays stateside.

Spence Jr is a decorated amateur and former Olympian who has fast gained a reputation as a devastating boxer-puncher in the states since turning professional in 2012, he is touted extremely highly by many and some even feel he is the future of boxing.

His relentless and all action style coupled with knock out power has seen him notch up a very eye catching highlight reel of knockouts, he is a guy who will wear you down, chopping you up with body punches and finishing things once the tree is ready to fall.

However there are defensive lapses for Brook to exploit and while Spence Jr has been stopping some very good opponents, he is yet to step in with any elite fighter. Brook will be his first and this fight may be a little too soon for Spence Jr.

I am of the opinion Brook has the tools to beat Spence Jr this Saturday night, he has an exceptional jab and is a hard punching and extremely accurate counter puncher, I can actually see this being a bad style match up for Spence Jr and at 6/4 Brook appears to be where the value lays in my assessment of how this fight plays out.

I believe Brooks jab and counter punching ability will be able to nullify Spence Jr’s explosive offence and I while I expect this fight to be close I am expecting Brook to get his hand raised by unanimous decision this weekend.
