Kell Brook Vs Carson Jones – 13th July 2013

Preview, Prediction and Betting Tip

Location – Craven Park Stadium, Hull, Yorkshire, United Kingdom

This is a rematch of a fight that took place almost exactly a year ago, Brook dominated the early rounds but found himself in the trenches late on as Jones took advantage of what appeared to be a stamina issue in Kell Brook, and Brook had to dig deep.

Personally i felt Brook showed tremendous heart at times in that fight against an underrated, tough and very game opponent who never gave Brook a moments rest and showed to have a very good chin, scorecards (114-114 115-113 116-113) were fine especially 116-113 which i thought was spot on, Brook did enough to win the fight.

However there are two factors to consider for the rematch, firstly it is only a 10 rounder and secondly its being fought at a catchweight of 150, and it certainly does not take a genius to work out these changes from the first fight would have been prompted by Brooks camp given what occurred last time and the fact Brook has only fought once in the last 12 months and is coming back from an Injury layoff.

Brook dominated the early rounds using his superior boxing skills and movement, he kept Jones at range while landing precision combinations and using his jab to good effect, as the fight progressed Brook seemed to tire which allowed Jones to bring the fight on the inside and turn the fight into a shootout, which clearly suited the physically strong Jones, however it is well worth noting Brook still held his own at times in that shootout, and as previously stated did show heart.

Jones is a fighter who has always had a tough road in the boxing game and has been matched with tough opponents from a very young age in fact at only 26 has already amassed a 47 fight record so he is a very tough guy with a huge amount of experience and in my opinion i think it was more the fact Jones had been, was and is underrated that led to a few eyebrows being raised at actually how close the fight was.

If Brook’s word is true that he didn’t prepare properly for the first fight and he did underestimate Jones last time then he knows what is required for this outing, the catchweight and round changes should help remedy any stamina issues, However factor in Brook has had a long lay off and word is out that his camp wanted to up the catchweight limit to 152 as Brook was struggling to make 150, in which Jones camp politely refused.

I believe this is a risky fight for Kell Brook, he may need to shake off some ring rust and Jones is a guy who will not allow for ring rust he will look to pressure Brook from round one and Brook will need to be on his A game for 10 rounds.

We could see an upset here but i think Brook will come through and could shine doing so, in terms of the outcome the most likely is a Brook decision but you cant even get evens or above on it, therefore this isn’t really a fight i would go big on.

A bet i like is 5/2 at Sky Bet for the fight to go under 9 rounds. With Carson Jones pressure and Kell Brooks precision plenty of leather should be landed, and given the fact you can get best price 5/2 on Brook by KO/TKO this bet seems to carry some value in a 10 round fight and offers us insurance if Jones does cause a huge upset and somehow stops Brook.

ATR’s Bet – £20 on the fight going under 9 rounds 5/2 at Sky Bet.
