Jonathan Gonzalez Vs Derek Ennis – 4th January 2013

Location – Magic City Casino, Miami, Florida, USA
Gonzalez is a hard hitting prospect with high hopes but in his last two fights he has failed to impress, he came in well over weight in his last fight against Serhiy Dzinziruk and despite an 8 pound weight advantage could only manage a draw and prior to that he laboured against quite standard Billy Lyell. However the tables have been turned and maybe Karma has dealt a hand to Gonzalez as Ennis has come in 6 pounds overweight for this bout.

Derek Ennis can be a mixed bag in the last couple of years or so he has recorded decent wins against Gabriel Rosado and he also won a thriller defending his USBA light middleweight title against Jose Gonzalez, although some claim Gonzalez had a raw deal on the scorecards in that fight for me it was a pick em fight, both fighters fought toe-toe thoughout the fight.

But following those two wins he had a nightmare against Giorbis Barthelemy getting stopped inside 2 rounds, and his 3 losses have all been stoppages so theres a vulnerability there, and if Gonzalez is the prospect people seem to think he is he should really be cutting through Ennis without any issues.

However i don’t feel it will necessarily be that clear cut, if Ennis brings his game and fancies this fight, Ennis can be a decent fighter when he wants to be, he steps off his opponents, boxes well and throws in combinations, mixes up his punches well and can also counter well, he doesn’t disregard his defence either although gaps can be found in his guard for the more astute opponent. This fight is really a boxer vs puncher duel and if Ennis brings his best boxing to the ring he could do ok in this fight.

The question i have to ask can value be found in this fight, Gonzalez should win however at a 1/12 he is unbackable. Ennis is 8/1 that could be backable for a small stake as i would probably say his chances have been slightly underrated at that price, and it could be worth a nibble. As stated Ennis can box Its down to whether Ennis has enough to keep Gonzalez honest if and when he has to get involved in a trade off, whilst also being ok with Gonzalez’s power and keeping on his feet. However Gonzalez knockout ratio could be illusive as its mainly against low opposition for that reason im going to make a small play on Ennis however im not expecting too much due to the weight issues Ennis has had, purely a value bet.

ATR’s Bet – £20 on Ennis any method 8/1 Pinnacle
