Jhonny Gonzalez Vs Gary Russell Jr

Preview and Prediction

THE STORY ON – JHONNY GONZALEZ

Gonzalez claimed his WBC title as a 7/1 underdog, when he stunned Abner Mares with a 1st round knockout, since then he has defended his title twice with convincing wins against Clive Atwell and Jorge Arce.

Gonzalez boasts a 74% KO which is pretty impressive over a 65 fight career in the bantamweight, super bantamweight and featherweight divisions, his left hook is a deadly weapon that can end a night early.

Physically Gonzalez has the advantages, he looks the bigger man with a notable height and reach advantage, if he can use those advantages and establish his jab he may just cause another upset this weekend.

As long as Gonzalez is there, he will be dangerous.

THE STORY ON – GARY RUSSELL JR

Gary Russell Jr is perhaps one of the quickest fighters in the sport right now, his footwork and combinations are lightning quick, Russell Jr tends to rely on reflexes to make him an awkward target to hit, with a low guard against Gonzalez that could be a dangerous reliance.

Russell Jr has been heavily criticised at the level of opposition he has faced prior to stepping in the ring with Vasyl Lomachenko, a fight in which while not disgraced, he was soundly outboxed in.

This weekend he has a chance to finally claim a world title against a champion with a much lesser skill set than Lomachenko, but he has dynamite KO power.

PREDICTION

Gonzalez has historically struggled with southpaws and in Russell Jr he has a southpaw with lightning speed and excellent footwork, Russell knows how to win rounds and I expect him to scoop them up in this one.

Gonzalez will always have a chance with the power he possesses but unless he lands a game changer in this one, I feel he will find himself heavily out pointed on the score cards.

Paddy Power have Russell Jr 11/10 to win by decision, that is my play.
