Jean Pascal Vs Lucian Bute – Fight preview and betting recommendation

Jean Pascal Vs Lucian Bute – 18th January 2013

Location – Montreal, Quebec Canada

NABF light heavyweight title

2 former world champions battle it out in what is set to be one of the biggest fights in Canadian boxing history.

Bute held the IBF super middleweight title for 5 years until he put it on the line against Carl Froch in Nottingham, May 2012. Froch beat him up and took his heart over 5 rounds that night, it was a brutal loss.

That was the type of loss a fighter never fully recovers mentally from and i am sure Bute still carries the demons from that night, with inactivity and only one fight since – against Denis Grachev, a win but nonetheless a fight Bute seemed unsure of himself.

You wonder if Bute is tough enough mentally and has the heart for an explosive guy like Jean Pascal.

Pascal has been inactive himself with only 3 fights in 3 years and some injuries along the way, both fighters may need to shake some ring rust come Saturday night.

Pascal a former WBC light heavyweight champion, has fought a higher level of opposition to Bute, a win against Chad Dawson, a draw against Bernard Hopkins followed by competitive losses to Hopkins (rematch) and Carl Froch, Pascal has proved he can compete with the very best in the division.

I think we have a very intriguing fight on our hands here, i see Bute as the more skilled technically and the more slick and competent boxer of the two.

Pascal has more speed and raw explosiveness, he tends to maintain a low output but will try and trap his opponent and can switch gears quickly. Both fighters can bang.

I can see Bute controlling the fight early with the Jab and general superior boxing ability but i think at some point in this fight Pascal closes the gap, lands some big shots and put’s Bute under sustained pressure, i think we see the fight turn at that point and for me i dont know if Bute has the trench tools.

I think if the fight goes the distance Pascal may be in trouble as it may mean Bute has boxed his way to a win, but for me i think Pascal will find Bute at some point and force a stoppage.

Due to inactivity of both fighters, and the fact i do have slight concerns over Pascal and the fact he has had issues with his shoulder in the past i am going to be cautious, a recurring injury mid fight to Pascal’s shoulder would most certainly mean we can wave goodbye to our money, while it’s unlikely its worth just weighing these things up.

Pascal is 13/8 to get the KO/TKO at Betfred while i cant say i see a huge amount of value in that price, i think it happens.
