James DeGale Vs Marco Antonio Periban

Preview, Prediction and Betting Tip.

James DeGale faces tough Mexican Marco Antonio Periban as he continues to await a shot at a world title, DeGale is coming in off the back of an impressive performance against Brandon Gonzales at Wembley in May stopping the unbeaten American in 4 rounds, albeit via a slightly premature stoppage by referee Steve Gray.

However DeGale certainly looked very impressive in that fight, landing big lefts on the American through four rounds and eventually had the American on the canvass and finishing the fight shortly after.

Question marks have certainly been raised about DeGale’s power at world level, In May however he looked more offensively minded and ruthless than we have seen him previously.

DeGale has quite often claimed motivational issues in the past, perhaps those claims have substance and DeGale’s recent move to Eddie Hearn’s Matchroom has invigorated DeGale and we are about to see his full potential flourish.

Periban will not be an easy test for DeGale, he is tough and has beaten some very good fighters, he came very close to beating Sakio Bika for the WBC super middleweight title losing a narrow majority decision.

Periban is not scared to let his hands go, when in range throws combination in fours and fives and if DeGale lingers on the ropes or switches off like he has been guilty of in the past, Periban will take advantage.

This could turn out to be a tough fight for DeGale but the olympic gold medallist should be able to use his superior talent to outbox the Mexican and win enough rounds to a clear points decision.

The problem I have with betting this fight is Degale is just 4/6 to get the decision and after the way he dropped and badly hurt Gonzales it looks like there is some risk there with not enough reward for my liking.

I see Periban is 11/5 to get knocked down at Paddy Power, and while Periban is tough and has only been down once in his career Degale should be able to draw the Mexican on to some big shots, all it takes is a flash knockdown and its a winner.

I think there is some value in it, but I will be keeping stakes small on this one.

Prediction: James DeGale UD

Boxing Tipster’s Bet: £10 on Periban to be knocked down 11/5 Paddy Power
