James Degale Vs Brandon Gonzales

Preview, Prediction and Betting recommendation

James Degale looks to kick off his new life with promotional team Matchroom sports with a win against Brandon Gonzales in this IBF title eliminator, a win for Degale could set up a showdown against the winner of Froch Vs Groves 2.

Gonzales is a unbeaten American who has shown glimpses of class in his career, specifically an excellent performance against previously unbeaten Jonathan Nelson in his last bout where he showed some quick and classy combinations, good movement and defence.

Gonzales has dispatched 10 of his 19 opponents however he does not appear to carry too much pop as since he has moved up level of opposition he has gone the distance in his last 6 outings.

Degale had become stale under Mick Hennesey and the Channel 5 regime and by his own admission he struggled to get himself motivated to box, hopefully the switch to Matchroom will see an invigorated James Degale as the Olympic gold medalist is without question extremely talent.

Degales footwork and movement is world class, but in more recent times with have seen him languishing on the ropes when there really is no need to be there, against Gonzales he will need to use all his movement  and slickness as while the American does some really effective things its Degale he has the eye catching style to sway the judges.

I think this match up is competitive and ill admit I have considered backing Gonzales at 4/1 but I think Degale is the better fighter and I expect him to come through what should be a tough test for him with a points win, by about 3 or 4 rounds.

I am expecting cards around the 116-112 to mark for Degale, but if he switches off like he has been guilty of in the past he could be in for a tough night, but in front of 80,000 fans at Wembley stadium and with a new lease of life under Matchroom i am expecting all Degale’s talents to be on display this weekend.

The problem here is Degale is only 8/11 to get the decision (coral),  which is really tight in terms of value, he is evens to get Unanimous decision down at Ladbrokes but with the competitiveness of this bout I dont think the evens is worth the risk as we could easily see a Majority decision with some of the variable judging scorecards we see at times.

I am going to take the 8/11 despite I am struggling with the element value of the bet, but Degale is not a big puncher and Gonzales is decent defensively, I think a Degale win by decision is the most likely outcome in this fight.

Boxing Tipster’s Bet: £30 on James Degale by decision 8/11 Coral
