James DeGale beats Andre Dirrell to win the IBF super middleweight title.

James DeGale made history on Saturday night to become the first British Olympic Gold Medallist to win a professional world title.

DeGale dropped Dirrell with a crushing overhand left in the second round and scored another knockdown in the same round, early on it looked as if DeGale may score a sensational stoppage victory to lift the title.

However DeGale took his foot off the gas and made hard work of a fight he perhaps could have won more comfortably as Dirrell fought his way back into the fight and dominated a majority of the middle rounds.

DeGale however found a second wind and held his own in the championship rounds to come out a worthy winner on scorecards of 114-112 x 2 and a rather shocking scorecard from judge Alan Davis of 117-109, to win by a unanimous decision.

Andre Dirrell deserves credit for the heart he displayed and the part he played in what was an engrossing fight at times.
