George Groves Vs Chris Eubank Jr – Preview and Prediction

In one of the most highly anticipated fights in British boxing for some time, George Groves puts his WBA world super middleweight title on the line against Chris Eubank Jr as they both compete for a place in the World Boxing Super Series final.

The event will take place at the Manchester Arena this Saturday, February 17th and will be aired from 7 pm on ITV Box Office. This ladies and gentleman is a fight that will get British Boxing 2018 truly underway. It is an exceptional, intriguing and defining match up.

George Groves has fought at world level on a few occasions and is going into this contest with the advantage of a wealth of experience his opponent does not have, he is a seasoned professional these days and while he has lost on three occasions to top opposition in Carl Froch (twice) and Badou Jack, some would argue two of those losses could have easily swung in his favour on another day, Groves has already proved he is a world class fighter.

Chris Eubank Jr on the other hand still has that air of unproven about him, while he has put in some flashy performances which have resulted in some eye-catching finishes, he hasn’t fought at the same level as his rival and given he has only recently moved up to super middleweight, this really is an acid test for Eubank Jr.

However Eubank Jr, who is also putting his IBO super middleweight belt on the line this weekend goes in as the betting favourite at the time of writing, Eubank Jr can be had for around 8/13 versus Groves who can be had at 6/4. However, I would not be surprised to see that line even up as the fight grows closer. I am of the opinion Groves should be the marginal favourite.

Reason being, Groves has the experience advantage, he is a fairly big super middleweight, whereas Eubank Jr to me looks a middleweight, this size factor could be defining on the night. Groves is proven at this level Eubank Jr is not, as stated this is where we find out truly how good Eubank Jr is and if he really belongs in the super middleweight division.

Eubank Jr will bring speed, combination punching and a high work rate to the table whereas Groves is the better technician, counter puncher, and bigger puncher of the two. Both bring different skills to the table hence why this is such an intriguing matchup.

However, for me, the value is in Groves experience, size advantage, punching power and ability to box well off the backfoot when called for, I am expecting those advantages to see him through to world boxing super series final this weekend in a closely contested bout that I believe will go the distance.
