Gennady Golovkin v Matthew Macklin – 29th June 2013

Preview, Prediction and Betting Tip

Location – MGM Grand at Foxwoods Resort, Mashantucket, Connecticut, USA

International Boxing Organization middleweight title

WBA World middleweight title

Golovkin is arguably the best middleweight in the world at the moment, he has 2 fists that appear to be made like concrete slabs. Further to that he has quick speed and well schooled ability, he likes to pressure his opponents and will cut of the ring well.

Much has been spoken about his level of opposition to date and see Macklin as a guy who can really test him, i am not so sure, Golovkin has still been stopping experienced and durable opposition, far bettering his opponents opposition, who have been of a legit level take Kassim Ouma for example, GGG stopped Ouma in the 10th round and Ouma had been the distance with a sting of solid opposition including a primed Jermaine Taylor.

Take Nobuhiro Ishida for example GGG brutally blew Ishida out in 3 rounds and this was a guy who stopped James Kirkland in one round and had gone the distance with Paul Williams and Dmitry Pirog in his last 4 bouts.

The problem for Matthew Macklin is he is a straight forward fighter and will most likely try and fight fire with fire, Macklin by his own omission doesnt fight to score points, and in that regard i think it is a bit like trying to burn someone with a clipper when they possess a flamethrower.

However in saying that Macklin can punch he stopped former champion Joachim Alcine in the 1st round in his last bout and he can land some big flush punches who knows what can happen, i just think Golovkin is too shrewd to get suckered into something that does not suit him and will take his time and use the ring well when he needs too.

There is a bet i feel represents really good value in this fight, Sky Bet have under 8 rounds at even money, that means if we don’t see the 9th round we are onto a winner, and with two guys who will probably meet each other square on often i think its a pretty decent bet at a good price.

Prediction – Golovkin by KO/TKO between rounds 4-6

ATR’s Bet – £50 on Under 8 rounds evens at Sky Bet.
