Derry Mathews Vs Curtis Woodhouse – 21st September 2013

Location – Olympia, Liverpool, UK

Commonwealth (British Empire) lightweight title

Mathews defends his commonwealth title against former professional footballer Curtis Woodhouse in what could be a real humdinger of a fight.

Mathews proved how dangerous he can be in his last outing when he was being convincingly outboxed by Tommy Coyle but stopped Coyle with one devastating shot in the 10th round which knocked Coyle out cold.

Mathews is a tough and resilient fighter with heart and pop in the locker, while his record of 8 losses, 7 by stoppage tells you there’s a vulnerability there it doesn’t really tell the story of the many times he has grinded through adversity in his career, 5 of his stoppage defeats came in a 2 year period and i think Mathews has got himself in a better place more recently.

Woodhouse played professional football for around 9 years before falling out of love with the sport and pursuing a career in a sport he claimed to be his first love, boxing. Woodhouse comes from a dysfunctional background with constant run ins with the law, he was recently most famed for driving 60 miles to confront a twitter troll who had been abusing him.

That fiery persona transcends into the ring at times, however despite being an aggressive come forward fighter woodhouse can box a little too, he has a decent jab that he uses to good effect, and he can certainly punch, however sometimes he can be guilty of swinging widely with his punches.

However i think this could become a battle of attrition, and i think in that scenario Woodhouse as the stronger man can pull off the upset, however its likely we could see a stoppage either way in this fight but Woodhouses odds appeal to me.
