Danny Garcia Vs Paulie Malignaggi – Preview and Prediction

Danny Garcia makes his debut in the welterweight division against the faded former champion Paulie Malignaggi as he looks to move his way in to a packed division where some big match ups could be made.

However this debut could be regarded as somewhat a soft introduction, Malignaggi while a famous name in the boxing world has seen better days and is not as elusive as he once was. With only 7 stoppages in 39 fights, Malignaggi doesn’t have the punching power to put Garcia in a precarious position at any time in this fight.

What Paulie Malignaggi does bring is a tactical boxing brain, good movement and a solid jab which if he executes could bag him some rounds, but you do get the feeling he needs to put in a flawless performance if he is to win this fight.

Adrien Broner moved up to welterweight to fight Malignaggi in 2013 in what was seen as a mismatch at the time, Malignaggi put in solid performance to nearly upset the odds, it could be dangerous to completely sleep on Malignaggi. This fight could be more competitive than some expect.

Garcia is a solid all round boxer with a devastating left hook that ends fights, however is possibly lucky to still have his unbeaten record with Maurico Herrera and Lamont Peterson having legitmate claims to have nicked close fights with Garcia.

Malignaggi has been out of the ring for a year now, the last time he entered the ring he was steam rolled by Shawn Porter, and Garcia certainly has the power to trouble Malignaggi also.

I think Garcia wins this fight by either late stoppage or decision but I certainly won’t be completely sleeping on Malignaggi, Garcia has shown to struggle with fighters that can present awkward movement that upsets his stride.

It will be interesting to see if Garcia carries his power to welterweight but it shouldn’t be an issue, he probably needs the move up and looks strong, ripped and in great shape in the build up to this fight.

It’s a difficult fight to bet as you can get evens on a Garcia decision or 6/4 on a Garcia stoppage win, I think the 6/4 for the stoppage carries some value, Garcia has 12 rounds to land his shots and break Malignaggi down.

I am going to play Garcia by stoppage but I am also going to have a tickle on Malignaggi for some insurance, odds of 8/1 simply make it a no brainer for me.

BETTING TIP: £20 on Garcia by KO/TKO 6/4 Bet365, £5 on Malignaggi 8/1 Matchbook.
