Carl Froch Vs Mikkel Kessler – 25th May 2013

Location – O2 Arena (Millenium Dome), Greenwich, London, United Kingdom

IBF and WBA Super Middleweight titles – Unification Bout

This is a rematch of a super six series matchup between the two back in 2010 in which Mikkel Kessler won a unanimous decision, it was a close fight but i would say 115-113 to Kessler was a fair enough score card, he outworked Froch at times and Froch needed to do more being the travelling fighter, however i do agree with Froch in the sense he probably would have got a nod if the fight had of been in Nottingham such is the way things seem to work out in Boxing.

However both have gone their separate ways since with Kessler announcing his retirement after the win against Froch citing an eye injury and loss of desire, whilst Froch has been fighting Elite opposition ever since with excellent wins over Arthur Abraham and Lucian Bute and dropping a clear loss to arguably top 3 pound for pounder in the world Andre Ward, he also blew Yusif Mack out in 5 rounds in his last bout and had a win over the tough Glen Johnson, so Froch has been very active.

Since his return Kessler has stopped 3 opponents Mehdi Bouadla, Allan Green and Brian Magee so good solid opposition but not quite in the same league as Froch.

Some may argue Lucian Bute was exposed in his fight against Froch i disagree with that i really believe Bute was up there with the top super middleweights in the world and was an Elite opponent, he is an excellent technical skilled boxer with top range power, but i now believe he will never be quite the same following the brutal loss to Froch it was the kind of brutal loss that can rip a fighters heart out of him, a quite sensational performance from Froch.

Carl Froch always keeps himself in tip top condition, he has a very relaxed demeanour in the ring, he tends to keep his hands very low, but can switch offensive gear from 1st to 4th very quickly which always makes him a dangerous opponent. Froch fights well off the backfoot he can box very well (as displayed against Abraham) or go to war which gives him good adaptability in the ring.

He can come in a little raw when throwing the right and this is when he can get caught flush, infact he did get caught a couple of times coming in to square in their last bout and got hurt momentarily by Kessler. He could do with mixing up his angles a little more to keep Kessler guessing as Kessler was able to read Froch very well in their last fight.

Kessler likes to come forward and cut of the rig, he throws solid combinations and works the body well, as like Froch he has good power and a solid chin, i would say his is slightly the bigger puncher with speed advantage, he probably has the more natural boxing ability also. Some seem to think Kessler has diminished somewhat since their last fight and while he may not have been as active as, or been in with the same level of opposition as Froch i still believe he is there or there abouts the same level as he was in there first outing and Froch was clearly mindful of Kesslers power in the first fight therefore had to be more tactical then sometimes we tend to see him.

However in Froch i do believe we are seeing a fighter hitting his peak right now, he has always been a very underrated fighter ever since his early years however now i think he has found something extra in his tool box and i believe that will see him through this fight.

People are expecting an Epic, possibly fight of the year contender i am not so sure both fighters made each other miss a lot in the first 10 rounds of the first bout and and it only really developed into an out and out war in the last 2 rounds and i don’t see it starting were it left off, however it is sure to be a great fight nonetheless.

The odds for this fight do not really appeal to me and i think the Bookmakers have this fight pretty much spot on with Froch being had at 1/2 or there abouts and Kessler at 2/1, thats about right for me, this makes it difficult to justify a large play on it.

I was contemplating making a small play on Froch by KO/TKO at 5/2 until i stumbled on the knockdown market at Sky Bet they have Kessler to be knocked down at 5/2 and both fighters to be knocked down at 12/1 and considering im not looking for a large play i think these prices are decent enough to have a bit of fun with specially if both can improve their timing from the last fight we will most certainly see some big shots landed and Froch is a great “Catcher”.

ATR’s BET – £20 on Kessler to be knocked down 5/2 Sky Bet and £5 on both fighters to be knocked down 12/1 Sky Bet
