Preview, Prediction & Betting Tip

This is an exciting domestic dust up and should be an entertaining fight as both fighters display good solid boxing skills and always come to fight.

Rees is a former WBA world champion, in 2007 he won a unanimous decision over Souleymane M’baye to claim the belt before losing it by via a 12th round stoppage by Andriy Kotelnik in what prior to the stoppage had been a competitive fight.

Crolla has had much success at domestic level, he has been British champion and has fought and beat many of the top level contenders in the UK domestic scene, however along the way there have been blemishes.

He was beaten by Youssef Al Hamidi in 2008 who was a 3-8-1 fighter at the time and is now a 12-55-2 with a 1.45% KO ratio.

He has lost to Gary Sykes twice, once in a 3 rounder in Prizefighter and was stopped in the 6th round of a fight with Derry Matthews in 2012, he looked to avenge that defeat in March this year but was unable too, however avoided another defeat by battling to draw in an entertaining clash.

For Crolla to win he will need to try and utilise his Jab and reach advantage and as Rees tries to come inside he will need to be light on his feet keeping range and firing off uppercuts and hooks on the advancing Rees, Crolla needs plenty of movement in this fight and he will need to commit to a high work rate for 12 rounds.

However Rees is a very tricky customer and knows how to get inside, he has nearly always been the shorter guy with a reach disadvantage, this is nothing new to Rees. Like usual expect Rees to use good head movement and a determined grit to force himself inside and make the fight physical which will play to his advantage.

While Crolla is a decent domestic fighter, i feel he is taking a step up against Rees and while it will be interesting to see how he fares, i don’t think he makes the step up here.

Rees is highly experienced fighting parts of his career at a world level, he proved his toughness and heart against Adrien Broner earlier this year and while he took some big shots in that fight trainer Gary Lockett made the right call throwing in the towel in the 5th round, Many feel that bout may affect Rees for this fight however i feel Lockett saved Rees for another day and prevented any damage that could have been carried over to his next bout.

Whilst Crolla has a good boxing brain he can get lured into trade-offs that dont suit him and i think this will be his downfall here as the more the fight is fought inside and the more physical it becomes the more i fancy Rees, Crolla is taking the next step up and the winner is in a good place to challenge Ricky Burns and i think that man will be Gavin Rees.
