Ashley Theophane Vs Pablo Cesar Cano – 14th September 2014

MGM Grand, Las Vegas, USA

This is an intriguing matchup and looks like a 50/50 fight to me, however the general consensus appears to be that the momentum is with Cano after a good performance against Paulie Malignaggi and a close fight against Shane Mosley.

However while Cano is a young game and an improving fighter Mosley is well past his best and while he is still as tough as nails is borderline shot, Cano was also schooled by a rather out of shapes Erik Morales, I think the issue with Malignaggi was, one Malignaggi under estimated Cano and two he didn’t have the power to deter Cano when it mattered in that fight and Cano rallied late, however I was of the opinion Malignaggi won that fight clear enough despite suffering a knockdown.

While Cano is a relentless pressure fighter with stoppage power he is not the quickest and can be out done slick movement and a generally good boxing brain and I think Theophane has a great chance in this fight to propel himself into the limelight as the underdog on a Mayweather undercard as I figure he could outbox Cano for large periods of this bout.

Cano will be dangerous but Theophane has an excellent defence and has been training and sparring with the master of defence FMJ, this should serve him well in a bout like this and a fighter with Cano’s style.

People look at Theophane’s loss to Darren Hamilton with concern, however Hamilton only began to find himself late and took boxing and his training more seriously and since beating Theophane has looked unbeatable at domestic level and clearly needs to move on to bigger things.

It was only 3 years ago Theophane came within a whisker of beating an up and coming Danny Garcia and Garcia has gone on to scoop up world titles since, Theophane may not be a big puncher but he certainly is no Malignaggi and Cano should know when he gets hit flush, Theophanes last opponent did.

Theophane is 7/4 at Betfred and while I think it could be close I think he can box his way to a close decision in this one.

ATR’s Bet – £40 on Theophane 7/4 Betfred £5 on the draw 25/1
