Antonio Tarver Vs Steve Cunningham – Preview and Prediction

Two former world champions Antonio Tarver and Steve Cunningham will clash this Friday night on the Premier Boxing Champions platform. There is no title at stake but the winner will close in on a shot at Deontay Wilder’s WBC Heavyweight World title belt.

Both men can now be regarded past their primes, Tarver is now a 46 year old veteran and Cunningham is heading towards 40 at the age of 39. This will likely be a last hurrah at a significant world title shot for both men.

Cunningham is coming in off the back of  loss against Vyacheslav Glazkov, but anyone watching that fight will know Cunningham was shamefully robbed in that bout and should have been announced the winner.

Tarver an Olympic Bronze Medallist and three time world champion has been in with some quality opposition in his career, he has fought Roy Jones Jr (x 3), Bernard Hopkins and Chad Dawson to name three, he caused a significant upset when he stopped a fading Roy Jones Jr inside 2 rounds, in 2004.

In 2011 however Tarver would fail a drug test following his bout with Lateef Kayode which would result in a suspension and fine.

It’s clear on paper Tarver has the better pedigree and in his prime was the better fighter with a superior skill set, it’s just whether the 46 year old will still have enough to match a guy like Cunningham who has shown to have a great engine and super human will to win.

Cunningham has an ill daughter who required a heart transplant and draws his inspiration from his family to fight and do whatever it takes to win, whatever the result this Friday night, you can be sure Cunningham will have given it everything and Tarver will not have it easy.

However in saying that I do believe Tarver can handle Cunningham and as the underdog needs to be backed at 6/4. However I will be making the play at bet365 as this could be close and in the event of a draw we are covered.

BETTING TIP: £20 on Antonio Tarver to win 6/4 bet365
