Andy Lee Vs Billy Joe Saunders – Preview and Prediction

It’s an early Christmas treat for boxing fans as a fantastic match up between Andy Lee and Billy Joe Saunders in an Anglo-Irish all traveler middleweight world title fight, takes place at the Manchester Arena this Saturday night. The bout also features a stacked undercard and can be viewed on Boxnation from 5 pm this Saturday night.

The champion Andy Lee will put his WBO world middleweight belt on the line against the British, European and Commonwealth middleweight champion Billy Joe Saunders.

Andy Lee will be bringing experience to the plate having fought some of the top fighters in the division, while undefeated Billy Joe Saunders will be venturing onto the world stage for the first time in his career having cleared up on the domestic scene.

Lee is a tall rangy southpaw with one punch knockout power, I series of spectacular one punch knockouts has earned him a reputation for being a puncher which probably takes away credit from his boxing ability, which is probably a tad underrated.

Lee can be tagged easily at times and has flaws but he is also very clever in the way he sets up his shots and has shown the ability to be able to change and adapt in fights, as he did in the second half of his fight with Peter Quillin, which earned him a well deserved draw.

With Adam Booth in his corner Andy Lee is going to be a very dangerous opponent over the 12 round championship distance for Billy Joe Saunders to overcome.

Billy Joe Saunders, also a southpaw is giving away height and reach advantage but is most certainly the more skilled boxer of the two fighters for me, he has exceptional movement, with sharp, crisp and precise combinations, however lacks that one punch power his opponent possesses.

This is such an intriguing match up, a real 50/50 fight, the bookmakers cannot split these two with both being available at the price of evens at time of writing and I can’t argue with that.

I can see Billy Joe Saunders having success early on in the fight against an opponent who tends to start relatively slow in fights, but his stamina has been called to question late on, as such I can see Andy Lee coming back into this fight and possibly landing some big shots that will really test the chin of Saunders.

This is one of toughest picks of the year, but I have to go with Saunders by decision in this one, I think providing he boxes smart and uses his exceptional skill set he can outbox Lee to a close but unanimous decision victory.

However in terms of betting this one I think the best play is a straddle on Saunders by decision at 6/4, followed with Andy Lee rounds 7-12 at 9/2 to cover.

PREDICTION: SAUNDERS UD

BETTING TIP: £20 on Saunders by decision 6/4 Sky Bet, £10 on Andy Lee rounds 7-12 9/2 888 sport.
