Andre Ward Vs Paul Smith – Preview and Prediction

Paul Smith faces the toughest test of his career as he takes on arguably the 2nd best fighter on the planet in Andre Ward. Ward will be looking to rejuvenate his career after promotional issues have kept him out of the ring for 19 months.

This will be yet another catchweight bout to take place this weekend, at 172lbs, 3lbs short of the official light heavyweight limit.

Smith is coming in off the back of two failed world title challenges against Artur Abraham in Germany, however possibly came out of those fights with his stock slightly enhanced after two hearty performances against the champion. Smith’s first fight with Abraham was a very tight affair that should have been much closer on the scorecards.

Compared to the ability and talent of his opponent Ward, Smith is limited but has shown to be rugged game and carries punching power. if Ward is a little rusty after a long lay off then Smith can certainly has enough tools to bring the fight to him.

Ward is an incredible fighter who has an abundance of skill and natural talent, he is a stand out amateur winning Olympic Gold for the US in the 2004 Athens Olympics, he is currently unbeaten as a professional but will be coming in off the back of a 19 month lay off.

Not always pleasing on the eye to the more casual fan Ward is not a huge crowd puller by style, however his skill set puts him in the crop of elite fighters in the sport today.

Ward’s ability to dictate the range and tempo of a fight is exceptional and if he is anything of the fighter he was two years ago he should have no problem in seeing off the challenge of Paul Smith this weekend.

If he is anything of the fighter he was, Ward should dominate and win this fight comfortably, Smith is a picked opponent for Andre Ward’s comeback and there is a reason for that, Ward should be able to look good and win.

And I think that is exactly what will happen, I like Smith but he is simply not on the level of a guy like Ward and I while not a big puncher I expect Ward to be able to get Smith out of their via accumulation.

I am expecting a mid to late rounds stoppage for the American, but there isn’t much value in a Ward TKO/KO at just 1/2, so I will be backing the under round market.
