Abner Mares Vs Leo Santa Cruz – Preview and Prediction

Abner Mares and Leo Santa Cruz clash for the vacant WBC Diamond featherweight title in what is an excellent match up. The bout will take place at the staples centre in California, USA on the premier boxing champions platform. The bout can be seen live in the UK on BT sport/ESPN from 3 am on Sunday 30 August.

Unbeaten and former super bantamweight world champion Leo Santa Cruz will be making his first charge into the featherweight division, the aggressive high volume Mexican will also be taking a step up in class against his Mexican counterpart Abner Mares.

Mares also a former super bantamweight world champion himself is the more established fighter at featherweight having already won a world title in the division. Mares beat Daniel Ponce De Leon in 2013 for the WBC featherweight world championship before being iced by Jhonny Gonzalez in the 1st round 3 months later, in just his first defence.

It wasn’t too long ago people where talking about Abner Mares as a top 10 pound for pound fighter however since the Gonzalez loss hasn’t looked quite the same fighter.

This is an intriguing match up Leo Santa Cruz brings a high volume aggressive style but Mares also likes to come forward with a bullish style that is perhaps more diverse than Santa Cruz.

It could be that Santa Cruz outworks Mares but given the opposition Santa Cruz has faced he has never been in a situation where he has really had to fight off the back foot, or in the trenches, I think Mares will be the first to ask those questions of Santa Cruz.

For me this is a close fight but I actually like the slight underdog Mares, I think there is value in 13/8, I am still not completely sold on Santa Cruz and I think Mares has more than enough talent to go with Santa Cruz in what should be an enthralling tight contest.

I will be making my play at Bet365 as we are covered for a refund on the draw.
